A propos de l'auteur

Saint Ignatius (Brianchaninov) was one of the leading spiritual writers of nineteenth century Russia. He became a monk in 1831 and the bishop of the Caucasus and the Black Sea in 1857. He devoted much of his life to writing spiritual works, his most famous being known in English translation as the afficher plus Arena, which has been continuously in print for almost half a century. He reposed in 1867 and was canonized in 1988. The Refuge is the inaugural English translation of the second volume of his Collected Works and follows the Field that was published in 2016. The soul that constantly remembers its duties abides in freedom. Its cares are lessened, and it does not worry about anything temporal. It cares only about reining in the passions and preserving the virtues; it constantly progresses in a life of virtue, filled with joy free of cares, abiding in a refuge with no misfortunes. afficher moins

Critiques

As in all his writings, Bishop Ignaty bases his instructions in the Arena on Scripture and the Holy Fathers. He particularly emphasizes the need for thorough and most frequent study of the Gospels; the first four chapters of the book are devoted to the need for basing one's life on the Gospel commandments. In addition, his instructions are often illustrated with incidents from the lives of saints and righteous ones, both ancient desert-dwellers and contemporaries living in the world. Above all, his instructions are practical and are not meant to provide a rigid framework or "formula," but rather a guide which can be adapted to the various needs and circumstances of the individual.
