An interesting novel set in modern day Japan, with links to the country's past. The writing is very poetic, though the narrative can only really be described as 'wishy-washy'. A young girl grows up in America, but when her American father dies she and her Japanese mother relocate to Japan. She is soon left to the mercy of her horrible uncle, from whom she inherits a incense shop. She also creates a life reading to men from behind a curtain. Yes, it is as strange as it sounds.
A meditation on modern and traditional Japan, this is a book that doesn't live up to its potential. Perhaps a bit more editing would not have gone astray.… (plus d'informations)
