A book about the author, Anne Royall, who is said to be the one who originated muckraking. Well researched and well written; the author includes a lot of quotes from Royall's writings, and they tell almost as much about her as her actual history. I read one of her books some time back, but didn't realize she was so well known in her time, nor that her trial and conviction as a "common scold" is considered the last witch trial in America. The author supplies a great many details about her life, but fails to give very many details about her trial. The title suggested this would pose a bigger portion of the book, and it was a disappointment not to hear more about it. Recommended; this author should be more well known in our time.… (plus d'informations)

I went into this book expecting a broader and shallower history, but instead the focus was on a few points in Appalachia that the author calls seminal for what the region would become. So: much more in depth and also earlier (primarily 18th century) than I had expected, but I think he pulled it off well. Probably the type of history I should have read while I lived in the South.

A surprising gem. I stumbled across this at the library. Having grown up on the edge of Appalachia in southwestern VA, it sounded intriguing, and it was.
