One word describes David Bellin’s historical novel, Sherman’s Chaplain: Excellent. In this short volume, Bellin creates a fictional chaplain who becomes the companion and spiritual advisor to General William Tecumseh Sherman during the Union Army’s march from Atlanta to Savannah. The author has crafted fictional events around the historical Civil War period from November 1864 to January 1865 which offer the reader insight into the life of the real General Sherman. Bellin presents the chaplain’s story in narrative letters that the parson writes to his wife. In these letters, the protagonist writes vivid descriptions of the war, its soldiers and Sherman.

Chaplain Ellis Brantley is twenty-one and freshly graduated from seminary school when he is promoted from a regimental chaplain with the Union Army to senior chaplain for Sherman after the general Sherman attends one of Brantley’s Sunday sermons.

Several incidents illustrate Brantley’s courage, integrity and naiveté. When an older black man is dressed, by the Union troops, in part Union and part Confederate gear to march ahead of the regiment into a small Georgia town that Sherman plans to take, Brantley is concerned for the man’s safety and follows closely behind as he makes his way into town. In another incident Brantley assists a rebel child who is attacked by Union troops after he shoots at them. Brantley gets the boy and his mother to a field hospital.

As a result of his impulsivity and passion, Brantley becomes a comfort to Sherman and many of his troops while also incurring the scrutiny and wrath of others in the Union Army.

This book explores the humanity of war, both positive and negative. It isolates the detached, warrior aspects of Sherman’s personality to showcase a man who was a father figure and teacher to the many men he was charged to lead. Brantley’s presence in this fictional take on historical events illuminates the gray areas of the Civil War that cannot simply be explained by the necessity of war or the power of faith. Bellin’s piece is beautifully written, historically accurate and unique in its presentation.

Sherman’s Chaplain is an impressive observation of men, humans, during one of the most heartbreaking episodes in American history. It is simple and elegant. Excellent. I highly recommend it.
