The daughter of the biblical Lazarus is sold into slavery by her stepfather. Although she feels she is well-treated in the first household she enters, she is not so fortunate when she is sold on.

Something of a surprise. Although it was the author's first historical novel and was meant to be a standalone, it serves as a prequel to the author's detective stories featuring Pliny and Tacitus, but is a lot grimmer in tone.

Begun this on Lazarus Saturday--apropos since the daughter of the Biblical Lazarus is the heroine. Lorcus' story through her [mostly] sad life to her appearance in the arena with other Christians. Lorcus' talent is her flute playing. Good evocation of the era of Domitian and simply written. It was also well paced.

Having finished Corpus Conundrum, I immediately had to buy Eyes of Aurora, and look forward to the next book in the series, if only to see what happens to the characters next. On kindle, so I could start immediately.
I didn't find the insertion of the perspective of Aurora into the story added to it much, and hope Bell doesn't do that again.
I find it interesting that he continued this story line from Death in the Ashes, and wonder if there are upcoming stories that have been mentioned but I didn't notice the clues being dropped.… (plus d'informations)

This was the second of Bell's Pliny books I read, and I enjoyed it. The writing is tight, characters appealing, and the research excellent.
