Jacqueline Beaujeu-Garnier (1917–1995)

Jacqueline Beaujeu-Garnier was a renowned French geographer and the first female professor of geography at the Sorbonne, Paris. She conducted research on world populations and the geography of health, worked with the International Geographical Union, and sought to make geography useful in finding solutions to social and environmental problems. She was the author of several widely-used texts, including Urban Geography (English translation 1967), Geography of Population (1967), France (1975), and Methods and Perspectives in Geography (1976). She also directed the French Regional Analysis Research Center and served as president of the Société de Géographie from 1983 to 1995. She led the scientific publication L'Information géographique and along with Philippe Pinchemel, founded the geographical periodical Hommes et Terres du Nord in 1963.
