Annie Glover is not a Tree Lover by Darleen Bailey Beard
Summary:
This book is about a fourth-grade girl named Annie. Annie's grandmother is constantantly protesting something, which embarrasses her. A tree that her grandmother named Elmer is scheduled to be cut down to make way for a swimming-pool complex. After Annie's grandmother literally attaches herself to the tree, Annie discovers the history behind the tree. With her new-found knowledge, Annie joins her grandmother in the protest and comes up with a plan to save the tree.

Personal Reaction:
I enjoyed this book as I find that it compares to real life situations that people face everyday. Plus, for me, the story shows that things are not always they way they appear and that it's okay to change your mind and stand up for what you believe in.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. In the classroom, I could ask the children to share their feelings about the story and have them explain what they might have done if they were faced with the same situation as Annie was.
2. I could have the children write their own stories with an issue that requires them to stand up for what they believe in.

Summary: The story Twister is about two children playing outside and suddenly it start getting dark and raining. The mother yells at them to come inside. It starts to hail and they run to the mothers room and she turns on the radio and yells twister. They run to the storm shelter and the mother goes to get the neighbor next door. She never shows back up and the children are worrying. The storm finally passes and they come out to see their mom and neighbor perfectly fine.

Personal Reaction:
I have never been a twister or never want to be near one. It was smart for them to go to shelter. Their mom was brave to get in the storm to go get their neighbor.

Classroom extension:
1. Show the movie Twister.
2. Have them draw a storm on a piece of paper.

Story about children living through a tornado. Shows their fears and how at the end there is much hope and important things are still the same.
