They only wrote a handful of letters over the course of two months, but this little collection is a pretty funny snapshot of Bashkirtseff and Maupassant's attitudes; Marie, bursting with life; Maupassant, bored to tears with his. All I could think after reading Maupassant's final letter is how Bashkirtseff might have brought some vibrancy into his life if they had met. If Marie managed to do so with a few letters, I like imagining the havoc she could've wreaked sitting directly across the man.… (plus d'informations)

Marie is right up their with Anais and Christina when it comes to inspiring me to keep a journal my whole life. She also really fed my love for history.

1954. A charming, short translation of a few brief letters between Guy De Maupassant and Marie Bashlirtseff, a young Russian noblewoman, who was to die of consumption a few months later. She wrote as a fangirl and started a witty exchange with him, on the subject mostly, of writing to strangers. It was the internet of it's time and he doubted her veracity, or at least said he did. The illustrations are the best part. They are by Danuta Laskowska. Utterly divine.
