When Don Pendleton's father dies, he leaves Don a house but no money. To a man who's never had to consider the cost of things, and whose fiancee can't imagine living on anything less than ten thousand a year, it's a real shock to suddenly have no money even for food.
The solution? A job, of course. Don manages to land a banking job that will pay him twelve hundred a year, but he's sure he can get promoted in a few months and have all the money his fiancee wants.

Meanwhile, Sally Winthrop, the firm's stenographer, watches Don's progress with a puzzled eye. He's never had a job before and doesn't quite grasp simple concepts like being on time. He seems to understand nothing of the value of money, and yet at the same time is awfully keen to make that ten thousand. Also, he's liable to starve during his first week, since he hasn't gotten paid yet. So she takes pity on him and tries to help in along in subtle ways, certain that he can become a success if he'll just listen to someone who knows the ropes.

Thus begins Don's education on real life and the gradual shifting of his perspective. A fun, sweet story, though Don's back-to-back marriage proposals to two different women and "now I see the light" moment might give you whiplash.
