A well-written, profusely-illustrated, and surprisingly thorough single-volume history of Maine from the days before European settlement to the present. Barry's extensive research and his wide-ranging interest in Maine, its history, people, and culture, make this an important contribution to the state's historiography.

The beauty of Barry's treatment of Maine is how he manages to work in politics, culture, sport, literature, art, industry, agriculture, religion, and more, all way maintaining a very readable narrative throughout. The illustrations complement the text very nicely as well.

My one main quibble with the book is its last chapter, in which Barry attempts to bring the history right up to the moment. Some unfortunate mischaracterizations and speculations make their way into the text in the last few pages, which is regrettable. I would also have been happy to have reference notes as well; the bibliography is extensive, but having information on sources for particular sections would be welcome.

Generally though, a very good read.
