A propos de l'auteur

John M. Barry was born in 1947. He is a widely respected journalist who has covered national politics extensively. He has used this background to write two highly acclaimed books of nonfiction. The Ambition and the Power: A True Story of Washington (1989 is an examination of use and abuse of power. afficher plus In Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America (1997), he revisits the power theme, but this time in the setting of a natural disaster. Barry is a careful researcher who documents the devastating facts of the flood and intertwines it with the fascinating story of powerful men and their selfish agendas. The conflict between the ruling class and black racists, the clash of former Senator LeRoy Percy and demagogue James K. Vardaman, the candidacy of Herbert Hoover, and the backlash election of Huey Long, all had roots in the policies surrounding the flood. Barry's political expertise comes from his years as Washington editor of Dun's Review, where he covered national politics. He has written for the Washington Post and magazines such as Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, and Esquire. The Transformed Cell: Unlocking the Mysteries of Cancer, coauthored with oncologist Steven A. Rosenberg, has been published in twelve languages. Barry maintains two homes, one in New Orleans and another in Washington, D.C. (Bowker Author Biography) afficher moins

Young readers notwithstanding, this is a scaled down version of the original which I listened to for 19 and a half hours a few years ago on audiobook. That one was excellent but occasionally a bit more technical than others might like (I am a retired nurse). This is timeless history as we have learned with the recent COVID pandemic and people need to know the similarities and differences in the human responses.
I am giving this caveat because the copy I requested and received from PENGUIN GROUP Penguin Young Readers Group, Viking Books for Young Readers via NetGalley is not TTS enabled.… (plus d'informations)

All the book's other merits and shortfalls notwithstanding, one should bear in mind, that this narrative is tremendously focused on US experience of the influenza of 1918-19. An outrageously enormous skew, for that matter. Events in Europe and the rest of the world are mentioned mostly in the passing.

A riveting account of the 1918 influenza pandemic and its historical context. In the movie OUTBREAK, the heroes save the day. In this story, there were many heroes but; they were too late to save between 50 and 100 million people. "
