A collection of writings by 19th century Quaker reformers on the issue of slavery by noted Quaker historian Hugh Barbour, with introduction and introductory material on each of the seven writers by Hugh Barbour.

A Master Quaker Historian interprets the beginnings of Quakerism in the religious context of England of 1650. His introduction to the 1985 version outlines the advances in Quaker scholarship of the Lamb’s War (1650-1660) since he wrote the book in 1964. His illumination of the contrast between Quakerism and Puritanism is still valid, as this is the key conflict of that time, for Quakers.

This is a classic of early Quaker history and its roots in the Puritan movement. I have two copies of this book, one from when I was a student at Pendle Hill in 1969-70.
