Louisiana specialist E. Wilson Lyon called Barbe-Marbois, "the man who sold Louisiana." Finance Minister under Premier Consul Bonaparte, Barbe-Marbois was assigned the task of negotiating the treaty of sale with James Monroe and Robert Livingston. He published this book outlining the general history of Louisiana with special emphasis on what Americans refer to as The Louisiana Purchase." A well written book that is mostly accurate; prized by professional historians.

Note at the beginning of Part II, in the chapter entitled "Cession of Louisiana by France to the United States," Barbe-Marbois repeats Volney's analysis of why France lost the war for North America (see my review of Volney's "View of the Climate and Soil of the USA.)… (plus d'informations)
