A book best enjoyed in large format to let Mr. Searle's drawings really sear your eyeballs. The British have a sense of patriotism, and are proud of their city, but it is not perfect, and and this pair of roaming brits do that judgement justice. This is a portrait of London before the "Swinging sixties" Mayhew, by the way, published a pioneering sociological study of Victorian London, and this was a kind of Centennial homage.. He was not kind, but he was accurate! Wish I had a copy of this book today.. Do get reprints going!… (plus d'informations)

The drawings alone are worth the price, and some of the put-downs are truly memorable.

A little history, some journalism, and Mr. Searle's lovely drawings. At the height of the Cold war, such a seriously patronizing effort was sure of commercial success. It was a humanizing effort headed towards a n understanding of how the population of a huge country tried to cope with an inefficient government.

theatre based murder mystery

the second detective was called Toby Appleby...written early in Michael Innes' career so wonder if one inspired the other or just coincidence?

like very much the main detective Chief Inspector Furniss
