I love the character's perspective! Set in the time of the Irish Potato Famine, Esty finds a way to rescue her family from their circumstances in Ireland by setting sail for Australia in search of gold.

The main character is a boy.

A rather predicatable boy inherits spooky location and then on a dark and stormy night strange things begin to happen. At the end everything is ok.
That said this is a well told and constructed story with little waste but plenty to draw you into the tale.

Matt runs away from home after his foster mother's partner beats him. He falls foul of two older boys who rob him of his money but he is saved from a worse fate by an eldery chap known as Gentleman Jeremy. They become friends and Jeremy helps Matt survive on the street until he becomes ill and they are evicted from their safe "home" under a tunnel. Can they survive harsh life on the streets? [p.10-18 "It was..." to the end of the chapter.]
