Courte biographie
Marion Polk Angellotti, born in California, was the daughter of a judge. In 1911 she published her first book, Sir John Hawkwood, based on the life of the 14th century English mercenary. Most of her works were short stories for pulp magazines such as Adventure, which included several others based on Hawkwood. She also wrote The Burgundian (1912) and Harlette (1913).
Her book/story The Firefly of France, based on fighter ace Georges Guynemer, was adapted into a 1918 Hollywood film. She served as a volunteer worker in France and Germany with the American Red Cross during World War I.

I liked this historical fiction/suspense set just prior to America's getting involved in WWI, when France and Germany were in the throes of war. I did find the main character Devereaux Bayne extremely niave and not suspicious enough of the wrong people, and capable of extreme false modesty after performing some heroic act, almost to the point of being humorous. I thought it was a good period drama and enjoyed it. This was read for group reading challenge & buddy read.
