Just Meh

This story was ok, but the characters were a little flat, and the prose was a little stilted. I think this author could use a bit of editing, but otherwise entertaining storyteller.

Though Georgia Holton is delighted to join her best friend in London for a fortnight, she has no expectation of finding romance. She has her motherless brothers and sisters to care for, after all, and only a meager inheritance of ten pounds to look forward to. When she crosses path with the wealthy but jaded Earl of Crossley, can she help him find the good in life?

I found Georgia's realistic approach to life refreshing. She isn't set on marrying a title in her brief visit to London. At times, though, her critical look at what was common at the time made her a bit tiresome. Still, her background made it realistic for her to raise an eyebrow at the goings-on of the ton.

On the other hand, I didn't warm up to the earl at all. I didn't feel like there was enough time or meetings between him and Georgia for him to change his view of the world so much.

Overall, this was a lovely weekend read. I would recommend it to readers looking for an easy and sweet read.

Rosamund Smythe is older than the other debutantes of the Little Season due to having spent several years in Vienna with her father. It was in Vienna where she 'spied' for him, learning information relevant to his work. Now in London, she overhears a plot to entrap the Duke of Wrentham and decides to take action.

Rose was a fun heroine to follow. I appreciated how much she felt a fish out of water in the situation she found herself in. She had time to grow up before her mother felt it necessary to find a husband. I felt the plot point of the 'fued' between the Smythes and the Duke of Wrentham a little weak. It could have been removed and I don't think much would have changed.

The story is told, alternating between Rose and Alex (the Duke of Wrentham). Although, the viewpoint occasionally shifts to one of Rose's friends and we even have one section where the "villian" has a conversation with his pawn where no one else is present. It was a bit jarring where these happen, but not so much it took me out of the story.

For readers looking for a clean Regency romance with a dash of mystery, I would recommend this!

Lady Julianna knows it may be a bit awkward when she acts as chaperone for her dear niece as her own London Season seven years previous hadn't ended well. Though she tries hard to keep Lord Ackerley at bay, her heart leads her back to him.

What I like is that right from the start, we know something drove Julianna to break her engagement, but we're not told what it is. This lady's behavior and speech allow us to feel her misery and how much she wishes to avoid another situation as had occurred before. It is only as the story continues that we finally get a hint and then at the end, it is resolved.

The pacing of the story is excellent, and the descriptions of the Regency London Season are delightful. Lord Ackerley is a true gentleman.

If there was anything that didn't sit well with me, was the ending which seemed abrupt to me. I also expected more consequences to be evident from Lady Julianna breaking her engagement, which I understood to cause damage to a lady's reputation no matter her rank.

In short, this is a lovely Regency tale that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a sweet novel.
