This is a strong story about a strong woman. At times the book was hard to read, because of the violence toward the women. Rape is always a hard subject to write about but Alexandra Allred handles it well, by not shying away from the harsh truth of the subject, and using a deft hand. Sam was difficult for me to like at first, but slowly he grew on me and by the end I was happy to see the happy ever after ending.

This gritty story does not flinch from the harsh truths of rape or violence against women. The suspense kept me guessing and I was rooting for that happy ever after ending which every romance has to have. I was not disappointed by the ending.… (plus d'informations)

I really, really wanted to like this book. I tried my best to figure out something to really like about it, but, alas, I could not find much. It's a mystery story with the protagonist Allie, she's a lesbian and a former journalist (obits) turned stay at home mom who sometimes does some research work for her friend Sandy (an investigative journalist at the paper where Allie used to work). To complicate the world, Allie also has a wife, Rae Ann and their two daughters, Krissy, two years old, and Kelli, ten months old. Allie also has a sister who's her polar opposite, Michelle, a K9 Officer for the police.

That was one of the things that I did like about the book, Kipper, Michelle's police dog was great. I also really liked the character of Sandy.

Unfortunately there was more that made it so that I couldn't get into the book than pulled me into the book. The beginning was written in a slightly unclear way, it seemed to be written so that at first I thought that Allie was still a reporter. That made it hard to get interested in at the beginning because I was immediately confused. It was also somewhat repetitive in places and at times the tenses changed a bit and pulled me out of the story then too.

Overall it wasn't the bottom of the barrel in regards to what I've read, not by a long shot, but it wasn't great or middling either. It was an interesting plot and if a second book came out in the series I might try it, see what happens to Allie.

I got this advanced galley through Netgalley on behalf of The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing House in exchange for a review.
