FINDING SIGNIFICANCE
The book documents a research project conducted by the Exploratorium to encourage visitors to discover meaning by adding narratives to popular exhibits. Actors were used to relate stories about the exhibits which were presented on video screens.
Big idea: It's possible to enhance visitors' ability to make connections, but the study didn't discover a reliable methodology to do so.
Strength: Good case study.
Weakness: The research was fundamentally flawed. Most of the results were negative - as Edison said, the research wasn't a failure because it revealed a number of methods that do not work. Key concepts: The authors found that retro-fitting existing exhibits wasn't a good choice; inquiry was marginally more effective than tacked-on narratives in encouraging participation, although neither could be termed successful.
Contents: Introduction, Theory and background, Setting the stage, The research process, Results, Lessons learned.
