In poetry form, this is the story of Chuck/ Charlie, the father of the brothers featured in Alexander’s other books.

Another absolute page-turner from a great team. The central conflict isn't really all that unique, but the text is so dynamic and compelling that I devoured the book. The emotions that ebb and flow through each poem are real and expressed with pinpoint accuracy; it becomes so easy to forget that you're reading verse. That said, the authors occasionally hit you with a page so artfully poetic that it takes your breath away. I'm still turning over the ending in my mind, a little unsure how to feel about it. The events are an absolute gut punch, and thoroughly believable, but I wish the build up had been a little more pronounced. I won't spoil here, but I think a little more time with the flag story line would have given the ending more impact.… (plus d'informations)

Alexander is not only a great poet, but a great poetic storyteller. In both this novel and [b:The Crossover|18263725|The Crossover|Kwame Alexander|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/books/1390427593s/18263725.jpg|25723388], there were times when the story was so enveloping that I forgot it was verse. At the same time there are individual poems that so sing on the page that you can't ignore the beat. Beyond form, Alexander has a keen grasp of the mindset of young boys, especially young black boys. He articulates their place in the world beautifully and universally. Indeed, I can remember having many of the same thoughts as his narrators about school, parents, girls, everything. The story here is beautifully told and captures something of the American experience for young kids in 2016. My only wish is that soccer played more of a role. In the Crossover, basketball was an essential element in the character and story, and I would have liked to see more of that in this book.… (plus d'informations)

Kwame Alexander is one of the finest poets of our age, and it will be a serious injustice if he is never named national poet laureate. The story went in a completely different direction than I expected given his previous work, but it still centered on the parent-child relationship. I have a very small quibble about how one of the climactic moments unfolded, but otherwise found this book stupendous.
