Thirty-something Jmiaa lives in Casablanca, trying to support herself and her young daughter through sex work. The first half of Straight from the Horse's Mouth has some interest to it, with its evocation of the seedier side of life in contemporary Morocco and Jmiaa's determined refusal to indulge in either self-pity or self-reflection. But as the book progressed, it became ever more disingenuous, and the shift from gritty bawdiness to fairytale ending just didn't work.

And the reader accompanies Jmiaa through her current life, where she might just have a chance at something better.

Jmiaa is a fascinating character. She's not much given to self-reflection, but she's also not going to indulge in feeling sorry for herself. Instead, she lives her life in the moment, keeping nothing to herself. I'm not sure I'd want to know her in real life, but she's a fantastic character to spend a few hours with.… (plus d'informations)

First of Asymptote book club reads for me. Liked it because the translator is from Rhode Island :) I wasn’t much taken with the writing, and the story seemed too Pat, too formulaic. Happy ending and all. There are elements of A Strong Woman, but something seems missing. The glossary annoyed me, although I used it. In the end, it was an easy read. #hollywood
