I really enjoyed the two main leads in this book and their relationship. They aren't your typical romantic leads. Jared is a bit older and grayer than usual; Ida is described as "big" and "robust", rather than "petite" and "womanly". But they're two very down to earth, relatable people that I can see fighting for their way of life in the remote northern portion of Wyoming. I especially adored how Ida was introduced, threatening to castrate an intruder, courtesy of her rifle. You go, girl!

Their relationship made me smile more than once, as well. They go from animosity to mutual respect and understanding in a very gradual way that is believable. It isn't insta-love like so many other romance novels can fall prey to. They had to work through mutual stubborn natures, whiny children, and other obstacles to make their relationship work. I think that compliments the pioneer environment and the target audience of this book nicely.

I do wish, however, that other aspects of this novel were as enjoyable. I did find some of the secondary characters very flat and stereotypical. I'm thinking Jared's daughter and the main baddie, Beau, here. Both are examples of stock characterizations and one nature personalities; not enjoyable at all.

I found this novel a very enjoyable escape to northern Wyoming, a part of the world I've been to personally. The leads were wonderful to get to know, and I adored reading how their relationship developed. And despite some issues with flat secondary characters, the author does a fantastic job in telling the story. Definitely recommended for enjoyers of Western romances with leads that seem more real than usual.
