- Hannah Adams was born in Medfield, Massachusetts. She educated herself in her father's library. Needing to supplement her family's income during the American Revolution, she became the first American woman to support herself by writing. Her first book was An Alphabetical Compendium of the Various Sects Which Have Appeared from the Beginning of the Christian Era to the Present Day in 1784. She also taught school while continued to write. She was part of a circle of writers and intellectuals in Boston. Her memoirs were published posthumously in 1832 with some additions and editing by her friend Hannah Farnham Sawyer Lee.
