So living nearby across the tracks my curiosity was peaked to find out what these folks found on on their one year in Palm Beach. Not a great deal as most of the book is daily log of where dinner, drinks, and dances occurred on their walking trips into Palm Beach night life.

The great drama was provided by a life threatening situation for one of their bird pets Duckie who may have ingested a bit of metal. Later Dick becomes a bit woozy hitting tennis balls in the intense heat and 911 is called, all OK. The climax I will not spoil as a life changing decision is reached.

The one thing that struck me add was that in a years time spent there, outside of restaurant and bar personnel not a single relationship of any kind was formed with a neighbor except at the very end in passing a young couple surfaces.

Not a great deal is learned about the community or those that populate it. From the little I have discerned on my own living in the area Palm Beach is aside from its exclusivity a very closed environ, of course by choice. Much like a large gated community though it is really an island, outsiders are not welcome, thank you. When I posted this book I was not surprised therefore I was the only member on this site do so. So I might as well be the only one to write a review also.

Years ago they even had implemented a system whereby hired help coming over from the mainland had to be registered and tagged. The beach is similarly protected in veiled attempt to keep undesirables, meaning everyone residing outside of Palm Beach out. There has been a raging battle over timed parking spots near the beach and they desired to eliminate them all. The state however stepped in and forced them to retain a few because they had contributed well over a million dollars to maintain the beautiful beach. Miles and miles of designated parking spots are posted "permit only." Permits meaning, don't bother. So the streets remain for them most part completely deserted. No rest room facilities are provided at the beach either, move along now.

So Dick and Pamela experienced Palm Beach in their way, but don't expect much as they were content with that.
