Courte biographie
Lesley Abravanel is a freelance journalist and a graduate of the University of Miami School of Communication. When she isn't combing South Florida for the latest hotels, restaurants, and attractions, she is on the lookout for vacationing celebrities, about whom she writes in her weekly nightlife and gossip column, "Velvet Underground," for the "Miami Herald." She is a contributor to "Conde Nast Traveller, Time Out," all three illustrious supermarket tabloids, reviews restaurants for AOL/Digital City South Florida, is the Miami correspondent for "Black Book Magazine," and is the author of "Frommer's South Florida" and "Frommer's Portable Miami."

Frommer's Florida 2012 is a good introduction to traveling and vacationing in America's `sunshine' state.

The 726 page guide is divided into fifteen chapters:

The Best of Florida (beaches, golf, spas, family....)
Florida in Depth (history, weather, best travel times....)
Suggested Florida Itineraries (seven possibilities)
Where to Stay & Eat in Miami
What to See and Do in Miami
The Keys & the Dry Tortugas
The Everglades & Biscayne National Park
The Gold Coast: Hallandale to the Palm Beaches
The Treasure Coast: Stuart to Sebastian
Southwest Florida
The Tampa Bay Area
Walt Disney World and Orlando
Northeast Florida
Northwest Florida: the Panhandle
Planning Your Trip (getting there, getting around, accommodation tips).

A handy take-along tear out map of Florida and major tourist areas is included, but, more importantly, thirty-nine detailed maps of cities and special interest maps are also included.

Travel guides seem to fall into two distinct categories: those designed to help the potential traveler decide where to go and those designed to help plan a trip once the destination has been selected. This is a book that will aid in deciding which aspects of Florida they want to visit, how they will get there, and where they will stay and dine once they are there. It is carefully detailed (hours of operation, costs) and up to date.

And, best of all from my perspective, it does not read as though it was written from Chamber of Commerce hand-outs (a fault of all too many recent guides I've encountered). For example, in reading on Key West, the traveler is warned: "If you must get a wearable memento, be careful of unscrupulous salespeople....you are entitled to a written estimate of any T-shirt work before you pay for it."

I've checked out the areas that I'm familiar with and the information provided is valid.

This is a hefty tome at a pound twelve ounces; far too heavy to tote around while sight-seeing, however, it's a great book to use in planning a visit. If you fly, you might want to carry this one in your hand as you board.
