- Chris Abani (1966) werd geboren in Afikpo in Nigeria. Hij zat al op zijn 18e een half jaar gevangen vanwege zijn eerste boek dat hij op die leeftijd publiceerde, een thriller waarin de Nigeriaanse regering een bedreiging zag voor de veiligheid van het land. De openlijke kritiek die hij na zijn vrijlating had op het Nigeriaanse bewind leidde tot een nieuwe gevangenschap. De weerslag hiervan speelt een belangrijke rol in zijn poëzie. In 1990 werd hij voor de derde keer gevangen gezet, waarbij zijn leven ernstig gevaar liep. Na achttien maanden werd hij vrijgelaten en verliet het land. Op het ogenblik woont Abani in de Verenigde Staten, waar hij hoogleraar is aan de Universiteit van California.

I especially loved the journal entries with recipes that served both corporal and spiritual needs, but found the overall plot a bit hard to follow.
