Take A Whirlwind Tour of the Wonders of the WorldExplore the wonders of the world with America's foremost adventurer, Richard Halliburton. In the Complete Book of Marvels Halliburton takes you with him on thrilling journeys to countless wonders of the world, including natural features like Gibraltar, the Grand Canyon, and Mount Fuji, and famous or forgotten temples and ancient cities, and monuments bigger than life. He follows in the footsteps of Demetrius and traverses the Great Wall. Replete with historical facts, maps, and a treasure trove of unique restored photographs of both well-known and hidden wonders, Halliburton journeys with the reader by his side to reveal the beauty and mystery of the world's greatest sights as if for the very first time. Our choice for learning Geography! We then go to GoogleEarth and visit via satellite. Memorable and so well written.

I remember easing this book off a shelf in the library while sitting through a long spelling test -- in third grade, I think. I didn't care about spelling, but I cared about the thick book with the wonderful black-and-white pictures. I checked it out of the library repeatedly until I saw it in a bookstore and begged my father for it. I still have my much leafed-through, slightly battered copy, long sans dust jacket. To this day, pulling it down and opening it to any of those photographs captures me instantly and I have to read all of Halliburton's adventures. Although written for a then-contemporary young audience, now the book is like a time travel machine. ( )

I grew up loving it, so did my son. We're in a competition to see who gets to all the places first. ( )

Of particular interest: He crosses the Alps into Italy on an elephant, just as Hannibal did against Rome. On the Italian side, he accidentally ran into the middle of Italian war games - this in pre-World War II Italy.
Rich full-page black-and-white photographs. Includes Macchu Pichu, Iguazu Falls, New York City, the Pyramids, Mt. Fuji, Tibet; includes the Seven Wonders of the World.
Written for children... but fascinating! ( )
