This book is about a French bulldog named Edward that goes to a Firehouse to help out. He messes things up but learns a good lesson about teamwork.

I love the way that the art is used to show Edward (the French Bulldog that wants to be a firefighter) is sort of the “screw up”. It’s funny! All the other firefighting dogs are so serious, but Edward is always doing something wrong or caught off guard. This seems pretty well done to me. The pictures are big and bright. The firetruck (probably the reason most little kids would pick up this book) is the biggest thing in the picture and you view it from all different angles. The only thing I feel pretty strongly about with the art in this book is the expressions on the characters’ faces. I feel like more could be shown here. The pictures are big and somewhat simple in terms of objects within the frame. The painting of those objects seems really pretty to me (sorry, excellent!) but the detail of the characters’ faces is somewhat…lacking. Edward has the most expression, and while it’s done fairly well, it doesn’t seem as detailed as other artists. There are many other dogs in the book. They all look exactly the same with exactly the same expressions throughout the whole book basically.

The theme of the book is about persistence…Keep trying until you succeed. Edward keeps “messing up” at being a firefighter, but eventually rescues a kitten and gets a parade in his honor. It’s a worthwhile theme—maybe with the exception of teaching that we need parades in our honor… I think that the illustrations do enhance the theme. There’s a line that says “Everyone works together.” and shows all the dogs pulling on the hose… On another page Edward is slipping off the ladder and another firedog is reaching out to help. All the dogs are depicted on many of the pages, working together and helping each other.

This would be a great book to read with young students during a class meeting when you need to talk about cooperation and teamwork. Students could brainstorm ways that their class works together like the Firehouse dogs work together.

Young fans of Mark Teague's character Edward, introduced in Funny Farm, will enjoy his latest adventures as he visits a firehouse with his cousin Judy. The text itself is rather flat, but Teague's wonderful illustrations make this a fun book to read and explore. Sure to be popular with youngsters who enjoy stories featuring firefighters.

This book is a cute story of a dog who longs to be a firefighter. He and a friend visit a firehouse and have a great adventure. In the end Edward has the opportunity to help the firefighters and saves the day.

I enjoyed this book. The pictures were very vibrant and descriptive of the story. It was very enjoyable.

To extend this book into the classroom I would discuss fire safety after reading the book. I would also use dramatic play to practice a fire plan for the students' homes. I might also plan a field trip to the local fire department and have a fire drill in my classroom.
