I love that Sheinkin keeps an accessible tone for younger readers without talking down to them - I appreciate his respect for his readers. I really didn't know much about Benedict Arnold before reading this book, and I now have a much more complete picture of both his positive contributions (and there were many) and why he eventually betrayed Washington. I like that Sheinkin strives to humanize him while still holding him accountable for his wrongs. This relatively brief work tells the life of Benedict Arnold in a concise yet wonderfully engaging narrative that flows like a story as opposed to non-fiction. Unlike some biographies that become mired in excessive detail, just enough information was imparted to depict the fascinating account of this most complicated patriot and ultimate traitor. The work made clear that Benedict Arnold was a complicated figure, and I particularly enjoyed the account of major John Andre. In most biographies Andre is glorified as an officer and gentleman of redeeming qualities, while this work made clear that in many ways he was a privileged officer whose circumstances did more for his reputation than his actual accomplishments. An excellent read and highly recommended. It was only after completing this book that I realized that it was also classified as a Young Adult non-fiction title. I considered the book equally suitable for adults and well as for students, in that it was interesting, well written, and a true adventure story. The author does an excellent job of interweaving the story of John Andre's life along with Benedict Arnold's life and bringing them together at the end. Sheinkin adds new aspects to the familiar story of the Revolutionary War, reintroduces several forgotten characters, fills in unknown elements of the Benedict Arnold story, and produced a most interesting book. A writer friend recommended this chapter book biography for young readers as a great example of factual research blended with effective storytelling. I agree. I really didn't know much about Benedict Arnold and his role in the Revolutionary War. The author does a very nice job of sharing the story of Arnold's life while providing historical context. It reads like an interesting novel. I recommend it for all who want to learn more about Arnold and that period in American history. Or if you just like a good biography, put this one on your list. aucune critique | ajouter une critique
