L’enquête commence et se poursuit sur un rythme assez lent, et c’est tant mieux parce que les personnages valent vraiment qu’on s’intéresse à eux.
Walt est veuf depuis peu, très affecté par le deuil de sa femme Martha. Sa fille, qui vole maintenant de ses propres ailes, lui manque beaucoup. Walt, cependant, ne risque pas de sombrer complètement dans la dépression, car il est entouré d’amis et de collègues aux personnalités bien campées. Harry Standing Bear (un nom qui lui convient à merveille), son meilleur ami, en plus de l’aider dans son enquête, se charge de le remettre en forme. Vic, son adjointe, n’a pas la langue dans sa poche et n’hésite pas à bousculer son patron. Lucian, le précédent shérif, maintenant retraité, n’a rien perdu de sa verve et de son énergie.
