A novel written in the first person as if by Harriet Tubman one of the most famous of the conductors on the Underground Railroad before, during and after the American Civil War. Many famous figures of the period play roles in the novel. Beginning with Tubman's life as a slave in MAryland, the book proceeds to her discovery that she is in fact "free' since her mother had been freed, even though that fact was withheld from her. She escapes North and becomes part of the Underground Railroad. Her adventures are gripping and highly graphic. When the Civil War begins, Tubman acts as a spy and a scout for the Union during battles in the South. In these recountings, the reader will find a new image of the horrific war and what it really was all about.After the Civil War, Tubman founds a home for the indigent elderly in Upstate New York. Ther she survives much adversity and her final triumphs close the novel. The novel is written in first person mild dialect, sometimes approaching the "Gullah" of the Sea Islands.
