I like all this guys books because of the characters more than anything and this book has some great fun characters and lines. The guardian of earth has a new tyro assigned to her and they have to stop the Halraads in their quest to dominate the earth and then the home planet of Sinaru. They take a human secret service guy as a prisoner but he's out to double cross them anyway, until he sort of becomes their friend or does he? You gotta love a book with the most sophisticated computer in the universe being a fan of The Hoff! ( )

A sci-fi that's not too sci but good on fi. The Guardian of the closed planet, Earth, is a Sinaruan woman called Dandeleo with some serious multiple personality issues who is sent a Tyro assistant, Arko, who is a by the book psychologist looking to get promoted because his girlfriend wants it. Along the way they pick up an American secret service guy with a heart problem, Quinn, who is held prisoner by the Guardian but is working against them for his boss on Earth, Kurt Charam. Sounds complicated but it's not. It's actually a lot of fun, with the dynamic between the three characters on the crystal ship being the main focus as they change from enemies to friends and all shades in between. Four characters if you include the computer Kas but five if you include the cat. The plot has several twists and there is a final ending but there is a hook for the net book - which should be good if it's like this one. ( )

Good characters and world frame, even if the plot is pretty standard in some ways. I enjoyed how the people never seemed to get on and somehow did, how it was serious but fun at the same time. Bit like Doctor Who or even that new Sherlock Holmes movie. A bit of a romp, like most of this author's books. ( )

I guess it's sci-fi but really it's the characters and their interactions that make the story, as with all this author's books. The Guardian of Earth is a Sinaruan and she's going nuts so her bosses send her a Tyro psyche, and after that things go downhill fast. Green war robots have been hidden in her hidden communications points on Earth, her computer goes as nuts as she does, and they pick up a human from the American secret service as a kind of hostage but also as a friend. The fate of the Earth depends on these three (four if you count the computer that's also a cat) but that's not the point so much as they get to hate each other, then gradually know each other and almost like each other. Witty and fun. Written in a whole different style to this author's other books, this is kind of present tense. It's odd but once you get used to it it really works to get to understand these people. When the Chevrolet grinds to a halt in the middle of the dark country road amongst the corn farms, the first thing Lainie assumes is that Jeffrey has planned this to get some time with her alone, away from their friends - not that they are about to be abducted by aliens.

‘I just follow orders from the Section Eight Commander Enari Forshtakli. As do you, I believe.’ It’s a pointed remark.

‘Yes, well, we debate that point from time to time.’
‘I told you, it’s a computer terminal. I can’t just want to wander around Earth with a piece of obvious alien hardware under my arm.’

‘So the first thing you think of is to make it a cat.’
‘I thought you were making a statement of individuality. I didn’t want to cramp your style.’

‘Individuality?’ he scoffs.

She accepts with a nod. ‘Oh, of course, that’s a dirty word where we’re from.'
‘Did you wager on me doing something stupid?’

‘Oh, yes.’ She looks up at him, ‘And I won. Stop being so precious.’
‘This is a fascinating clip,’ he nods to the main Kaspar screen. ‘Have you seen it? This creature crawls through air ducts eating livers...’‘You do know these are stories, right?’

He scoffs. ‘Obviously. They are professionally recorded and edited with music and multiple angles. Recreations of events, undoubtedly.'
'Oh, oh. Kaspar, start explaining the difference between reality and episodes of X-Files.’
