I like all this guys books because of the characters more than anything and this book has some great fun characters and lines. The guardian of earth has a new tyro assigned to her and they have to stop the Halraads in their quest to dominate the earth and then the home planet of Sinaru. They take a human secret service guy as a prisoner but he's out to double cross them anyway, until he sort of becomes their friend or does he? You gotta love a book with the most sophisticated computer in the universe being a fan of The Hoff! ( )
A sci-fi that's not too sci but good on fi. The Guardian of the closed planet, Earth, is a Sinaruan woman called Dandeleo with some serious multiple personality issues who is sent a Tyro assistant, Arko, who is a by the book psychologist looking to get promoted because his girlfriend wants it. Along the way they pick up an American secret service guy with a heart problem, Quinn, who is held prisoner by the Guardian but is working against them for his boss on Earth, Kurt Charam. Sounds complicated but it's not. It's actually a lot of fun, with the dynamic between the three characters on the crystal ship being the main focus as they change from enemies to friends and all shades in between. Four characters if you include the computer Kas but five if you include the cat. The plot has several twists and there is a final ending but there is a hook for the net book - which should be good if it's like this one. ( )
Good characters and world frame, even if the plot is pretty standard in some ways. I enjoyed how the people never seemed to get on and somehow did, how it was serious but fun at the same time. Bit like Doctor Who or even that new Sherlock Holmes movie. A bit of a romp, like most of this author's books. ( )
I guess it's sci-fi but really it's the characters and their interactions that make the story, as with all this author's books. The Guardian of Earth is a Sinaruan and she's going nuts so her bosses send her a Tyro psyche, and after that things go downhill fast. Green war robots have been hidden in her hidden communications points on Earth, her computer goes as nuts as she does, and they pick up a human from the American secret service as a kind of hostage but also as a friend. The fate of the Earth depends on these three (four if you count the computer that's also a cat) but that's not the point so much as they get to hate each other, then gradually know each other and almost like each other. Witty and fun. Written in a whole different style to this author's other books, this is kind of present tense. It's odd but once you get used to it it really works to get to understand these people. When the Chevrolet grinds to a halt in the middle of the dark country road amongst the corn farms, the first thing Lainie assumes is that Jeffrey has planned this to get some time with her alone, away from their friends - not that they are about to be abducted by aliens.

‘I just follow orders from the Section Eight Commander Enari Forshtakli. As do you, I believe.’ It’s a pointed remark.
‘Yes, well, we debate that point from time to time.’
‘I told you, it’s a computer terminal. I can’t just want to wander around Earth with a piece of obvious alien hardware under my arm.’
‘So the first thing you think of is to make it a cat.’
‘I thought you were making a statement of individuality. I didn’t want to cramp your style.’
‘Individuality?’ he scoffs.
She accepts with a nod. ‘Oh, of course, that’s a dirty word where we’re from.'
‘Did you wager on me doing something stupid?’
‘Oh, yes.’ She looks up at him, ‘And I won. Stop being so precious.’
‘This is a fascinating clip,’ he nods to the main Kaspar screen. ‘Have you seen it? This creature crawls through air ducts eating livers...’‘You do know these are stories, right?’
He scoffs. ‘Obviously. They are professionally recorded and edited with music and multiple angles. Recreations of events, undoubtedly.' 'Oh, oh. Kaspar, start explaining the difference between reality and episodes of X-Files.’
Just then he closes the book and yawns, stretches, takes a sip from his water bottle and leans back on his chair.
Great, Dandeleo sighs. Now he decides to have a rest from reading. I bet a genre novel would have kept him enthralled.
‘Bomb? What sort of bomb?’ Arkonito backs up so quickly he runs into the rack behind him. It’s not that he’s scared, he tells himself. He’s just sensibly cautious. ‘It’s the sort that explodes and takes your damn head off.’
Is she crazy? Well, probably, that was one of his early estimations of her, but there’s crazy and then there’s playing-with-bombs crazy. He can’t really think of someone he would less like touching this device.
‘Can I make an observation?’
‘If you feel this is an appropriate time, while I’m holding the main part of a bomb in my hands.’
Unable to contain his frustration he splutters, ‘This sort of insouciant, aberrant, conceited, downright stupid behaviour is just the sort of thing a Guardian should not possess. It is the sort of thing—’ ‘—that has people sending psychanalysts out to evaluate your sanity.’
‘This was your plan? Escape to the bathroom? Swear a lot?’
'Do you have anything else to do or are you just so enamoured with interrogation that you want to die asking inane questions?’ ‘I don’t want to die at all,’ Quinn says, suddenly very quiet. And Arkonito can sympathise. ‘No-one ever does,’ he says softly. ‘Yet, here we are.’
Well, I’ll take your opinion onboard - and totally disregard it
She has no time for this and no interest in listening to alternatives now that she has her plan. ‘Tell you what, Arko. First we will try my idea... then we will stop.’‘But—’Her voice is hard; she wants no arguments at this point. ‘What makes you think this is a democracy? We do as I say, Arko. Got it?’
‘I do not know why I bother.’ ‘Finally we agree,’ she says.
'I shall certainly be reporting this up the chain of command if you do not!’ Her smile becomes a snarl. ‘I’ll whip your arse with the chain of command! If you report me then I’ll report you!’
‘Should I take my clothes off now?’ he asks, his voice a little higher than normal.Dandeleo gives him a curious look. ‘I suppose if you feel the desire to... Sure.’‘Do I have to, though?’‘If you think a machine sophisticated enough to dissect you on a cellular level and rebuild you as a different species isn’t good enough to be able to tell flesh from a cheap suit, then go ahead.’
The truth of the universe is that everything is really quite mundane. It’s all the same. Homogenised. Boring. That’s why closed worlds are so interesting and why we value the diversity they promise, even if they generally don’t deliver. You’re better off here.
‘Only you would consider getting your arse kicked to be buffoonery, Arko.’
You broke my life.
"I will report this!" "That's your ultimate threat, is it? Pfft!"

Circling the Earth in high orbit geostationary to Australia, a beaten vintage Dino Ferari slowly rotates, an enormous Halraad war robot gripping the remains of the roof and waiting in hibernation for Dandeleo to return.
