It is Thanksgiving Day and the turkey needs to be carved. Who will do the job? A killer whale, or a saber-toothed tiger, or a tyrannosaurus rex? None of those seem quite right. So who will carve the turkey this Thanksgiving?

During the week of thanksgiving I read this book aloud to the students at my mentor school. The students in the room roared with laughter as I read. The big questions is, “Who will carve the turkey this thanksgiving? As the story continues a young boy names different animals that could carve the turkey, but then give as reason as to why that animal would be a poor choice. In the end of the little boys rant, the door opens and grandpa arrives, he will carve the turkey like he does every year. The imagination of the narrator runs wild in this book naming many animals that are impossible choices to carve the turkey, however still humorous to think of. I enjoyed the content of this story as well as the illustrations that accompanied them. The illustrations depicted every possible animal they young boy listed, and showed why they would be a bad choice to carve the turkey. The illustrations hold a lot of importance as to the engagement level of the text for me, this story had well planned and crisp illustrations that told the story perfectly. Most importantly through reading this aloud to the class I realized that there were multiple gateway toward conversations between the class and I. Initially we made predictions about the story, asked questions about the animals and lastly commented on if our predictions were accurate. As a resource this book was wonderful and engaging for the students in my mentor class, I would likely read this again around thanksgiving in the future. ( )

A little boy is sitting at the thanksgiving table alone wondering who is going to carve the turkey. He comes up with all of these crazy ideas. Finally his grandpa shows up and the boy decides he will carve the turkey just like every year. ( )
