Mt. Rushmore is just one of those images that is out there. I've never understood where it came from, or just what it was doing there in the middle of the country... this book does a good job of explaining how its there for all the obvious reasons (money, pride, etc), and yet how the story is far more complicated than one might have expected. I particularly appreciated how this author set the sculpture into context of the wider settler-native history.
