Aardig boek over de jongeman Skip Cuddy, die onverwacht voor een pasgeboren baby moet zorgen. Skip is door de bejaarde Lydia Blessing aangenomen om voor haar uitgebreide landgoed te zorgen, ondanks dat hij juist bijna een jaar achter de tralies heeft gezeten. Hij woont boven de garage in een klein appartement en vindt op een ochtend een baby in een doos. Hij weet het meisje in leven te houden en doet er alles aan om haar bestaan geheim te houden. Als Lydia midden in een onweersbui wakker wordt van blikseminslag waarbij er een kleine brand ontstaat, zoekt zij in het donker naar Skip om haar te helpen en komt achter het bestaan van de baby.
