On one level, All This and a Bookshop Too is a lovely mumsy book about literal and symbolic maternity, nestings, hatchings, Dorothy with her beloved husband, Roy, their eight children, plus other family, friends and pets who are encompassed by those warm feathers. It’s also a painted scene of Auckland in the 1950s and 60s, where cows grazed between suburbs, where nothing was labelled “organic” because everything was, and the mark of luxury was ownership of a second-hand car. It documents our education system in the same era: teachers college, classroom teaching, Playcentre, the educational gurus of the day. But most of all it’s a book about books. Not just any books, but books for the young. It’s in her passion to bring good books to children that this Kiwi soars far and wide so that now the rest of us travelling in almost any country in the world run into: “Oh, so you’re from New Zealand. Do you know Dorothy Butler?”......
Dorothy Butler is an international award-winning authority on children's books and reading. She has also been a successful teacher, an innovative bookseller and a much-loved author. Dorothy's book is both a personal story of triumphs and tragedies, and a salute to the golden age of children's book publishing and retailing in New Zealand.
