This book has been produced for people who want to gain a basic knowledge about the Treaty of Waitangi and its implications. Over the past few decades, the Treaty has come into focus in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Since it was signed in 1840, the Treaty has been seen by Maori as an essential part of their understanding and ways of operating. To understand our present situation, we must journey back and re-learn our history to understand the effects of the decisions made by those who lived before us. This book invited readers to put aside their anxieties and discover what the promise of the Treaty is really about. Non-Maori have nothing to fear and much to gain from acknowledging the Maori test of the Treaty - that clearly shows Maori retained their sovereignty while allowing the Crown to exercise a form of governance.
