I don't know if you want to count her as C or O, but may I suggest something by Carol O'Connell. Both Judas Child and Bone by Bone are stand-alone novels. Judas Child by Carol O'Connell ... is the last Mallory, need to check Carol O'Connell's website to see what's what.
It's been some time since I read "Judas Child", so I don't remember much about it. O'Connell's other stand-alone "Bone by Bone" was good, but not as intense as the Mallory series. ... ol

I have read Judas Child by her and loved it! Catgwinn ~ Oh, I hope not (tho that's what I thought too about Find Me). Find Me and Judas Child are my two favorite O'Connells. I cried buckets with Find Me, and also some with Judas Child but not as much. ... series this summer. Currently I'm reading Peter Robinson's "Friend of the Devil".

You mentioned liking 'Phantom of The ... Judas Child is one of my favorites by O'Connell. If you're not ready to delve into her Mallory series, she has another stand-alone called Bone by Bone. Another category finished!! Just finished Judas Child by Carol O'Connell and really enjoyed it. I put it on my list because of the great reviews it got on LT and I was not disappointed. I'll be reading more of this author. ... pls., starting with Mallory's Oracle). These are hard-boiled noir mysteries set in modern-day NYC. Her stand-alone, Judas Child, is also wonderful! I'm late finding this thread but I just had to comment on what tymfos said about Judas Child in #91. It is probably one of my very favorite contemporary mystery/thrillers ever, right after Find Me, the last mystery in the Kathy Mallory series by the same author.

 I just finished Judas Child by Carol O'Connell, and I loved it! Such interesting characters, and what a page turner! Once I finally got started reading, I could hardly put it down. And it left me thinking. Just finished Judas Child. Once I got started, it was very difficult to put it down, even when I had to. A terrific book, interesting characters, lots of plot twists right up to the very end. And it left me thinking. ... story. I also finally read The Perfect Storm, and it was an engrossing, thought-provoking read.
I meant to take up Judas Child (as my next fiction read) and Isaac's Storm (my next non-fiction), but before I could get started on them, I was at the county library with my son and picked ... ... bodies and drug dealers, but it works for this mystery/suspense fan.)

I am reading Carol O'Connell's Judas Child as comic relief from the Civil War. i am NOT a fan of her Mallory series, probably the only one on LT who really dislikes Mallory. But this book is not bad.

Well how complicated could this be? ... Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibbotson. I like to mix it up a bit...but now back into my favorite genre. I am starting Judas Child by Carol O'Connell. ... :) If you want to read something by O'Connell that isn't about Mallory, she has one stand-alone that I liked a lot, Judas Child. ... I haven't read that one yet), and Carol O'Connell for her Mallory series (set in NYC) and her one (so far) stand-alone, Judas Child. Both are outstanding writers of exceptionally good dark mysteries that are not the usual fare.
And I'll second Lee Child's Repairman Jack series ~ though ... ... you give the series another try. However, if you just don't like Mallory, O'Connor wrote a wonderful stand-alone called Judas Child that you might like better, and I understand her next book which is due out in a few months is another stand-alone. ... not even tearjerkers! Find Me was just so wrenching. Darn, I hope it's not the last of the series!
Yes, I agree ~ Judas Child was just brilliant. If her next standalone (I think it's going to be called "Bone by Bone") is as good, it might take the sting out of having to wait to see if ... Storeetllr - yeah, I have read everything by O'Connell at least once. She is my favorite mystery writer. I started Judas Child over the minute I finished it, and I rarely do that.
I know what you mean about Find Me. I sobbed as I read the last page. ... got to be my very favorite mystery writer today, male or female. I love her Mallory series, and I found her stand-alone Judas Child just amazing! Can't wait for her new stand-alone which comes out in December 08.
I also have a weakness for J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) for her Eve Dallas ... ... novel. I'm kind of disappointed it's not another Mallory mystery, but I'll get over it, esp. if Bone by Bone is as good as Judas Child. ... and down with excitement* That is great news! I hope it's a Mallory, but if not that's okay. I love her writing (loved Judas Child). Not sure I can wait that long, though. Argh! ... I hope you give it another chance (or two), as it is one of the best mystery series I've ever read. (Oh, or you could try Judas Child, which is a stand alone.)

Yes, I read Judas Child awhile back. O'Connell is one of my favorite authors. ... new (to me) authors because of LT recommendations and reviews, including Carol O'Connell (the Mallory mysteries and Judas Child), Guy Gavriel Kay (The Lions of al-Rassan and Tigana and Ysabel), Eoin Colfer (the Artemis Fowl series), and Jim Butcher (The Dresden Files series). ... ... one of my favorites this year. Actually, I "discovered" O'Connell this year and read all the Mallory mysteries as well as Judas Child. I sure hope she continues writing about Mallory.
