Chase Benteen Calder comes back to Ft Worth from a trail drive to marry Lorna Pearce and drive a herd of Texas Longhorn cattle to Montana in order to stake out a homestead there, the Triple C. The book covers the drive of the cattle up the Chisholm Trail to Dodge City and beyond along with the hazards to men, women, and beast. Lorna is an independent minded person which Chase has a hard time accepting. Benteen is dealing with the loss of his father and the loss of his father's ranch to Judd Boston.
