It remains an undisputed classic, one of the most influential stories ever told in comics, and is a book cited by the filmmakers as an inspiration for the most recent Batman movies. It is ten years after an aging Batman has retired, and Gotham City has sunk deeper into decadence and lawlessness. Now, when his city needs him most, the Dark Knight returns in a blaze of glory. Joined by Carrie Kelly, a teenage female Robin, Batman takes to the streets to end the threat of the mutant gangs that have overrun the city. And after facing off against his two greatest enemies, the Joker and Two-Face, for the final time Batman finds himself in mortal combat with his former ally, Superman, in a battle that only one of them will survive.
Depuis que Robin est mort il y a 10 ans, Batman a prit sa retraite. Les USA et la Russie sont au bord d'une guerre nucléaire, son ami, le commissaire Gordon va bientôt partir à la retraite et les Super Héro ont été banni à l'exception de Superman, devenu le bras armé de la Maison Blanche. Mais Batman ne s'est pas calmé il continu de faire des cauchemars, revivant l'assassinat de ses parents chaque nuit et l'action lui manque. Heureusement pour nous le gang des mutants met Gotham City à feu et à sang depuis trop longtemps, le désir d'action et de vengeance de Batman va le pousser à enfiler une ultime fois son costume.
Batman : Dark Knight est le comic qui a réussi à redonner un souffle nouveau à Batman alors que celui-ci était devenu limite has been. C'est d'ailleurs parce que Batman intéressant de moins en moins les lecteurs que Frank Miller à pu en faire ce qu'il voulait. Le résultat est une œuvre sombre et violente, Batman n'a jamais été aussi respecté et aussi haït par la population de Gotham City, la BD est d'ailleurs entre coupé de débat télévisé autour du retour du Dark Knight et le fait que Batman soit devenu à son tour hors la loi poussera le gouvernement à envoyer Superman pour mettre fin à son règne une bonne fois pour toute.
Frank Miller signe une oeuvre passionnante qui sort complètement des sentiers battus. ( )
"The stories are convoluted, difficult to follow and crammed with far too much text. The drawings offer a grotesquely muscle-bound Batman and Superman, not the lovable champions of old.... If this book is meant for kids, I doubt that they will be pleased. If it is aimed at adults, they are not the sort I want to drink with."
