`A novelist conveys a great deal "between the lines", at a level above or
below the textual, whereas the historian is more or less confined within
the boundaries of linear narrative, with only the occasional footnote to
connect the reader to ideas outside the text. The novelist can say one thing
but mean another, or both or many things. In sorting out what he means, by
paying aTTENTION TO THE ALLUSIONS, THE READER LEARNS A GREAT DEAL MORE THAN
SIMPLY WHAT THE WORDS ON THE PAGE SAY. tHE HISTORIAN IS LIMITED TO SAYING
ONLY WHAT HE MEANS (AND CAN VERIFY) AND MEANINg PRECISELY WHAT HE SAYS. I
would contend that what the novelist does, what the historian cannot do as
well, goes beyond craft, beyond skill, into the realm of art, where we find
symbols, allusion, meaning.
