Many books, amusing or not-so-amusing, have waded into the "would you rather" fray since Burningham in 1978. His version is very child-appropriate, but more odd than funny.
At least in the original edition, this book also hails from the era of not bothering to translate between English and American dialect (I think of for instance the US Harry Potter books swapping "flashlight" in for "torch"). The page that asks readers to choose among items including "drink snail squash" will make little to no sense to American children who do not know "squash" is UK English for pressed juice, e.g. lemonade. I thought this was a great mentor book for writing. Not only to have a topic to write about but also a great conversation starter for small groups. I think students would be very creative coming up with ideas that they could write about. This would make a great classroom book! Students could write by themselves or with a partner. It would be great to have them think of what would you rathers and try to keep them in similar categories. ( )

Children have wandering minds. Every child has different opinions on what they would rather do when asked between a few things. The book starts off with some questions of "would you rather" that don't take much time to think about. Towards the middle of the book the questions require more thinking. (ex. "Would you rather your house be surrounded by water, snow, or a jungle?" compared to "Would you rather be crushed by a snake or swallowed by a fish?" The book will have a childs imagination running wild. The illustrations in the book are very entertaining, and children will always be on the edge of their seats wanting to know what they will get asked next. Children will make their best desisions on answering the questions even though many of them have no good outcome. ( )

Would You Rather gives young readers endless possibilities to make choices on what they would rather do. Some choices include: an elephants drinking your bathwater, an eagle stealing your dinner, a pig trying on your clothes, and a hippo sleeping in your bed. The possibilities range from fun and silly to scary and gross. With this book, readers can form their own opinions, and it would make for good conversation in the classroom. Bright and colorful pictures go with the fun and quirky choices, which will sure appeal to all readers. A fun read for all ages. ( )

This might segue into a nice piece of persuasive writing if it is presented right. I don't know yet. I haven't had a chance to try it, though I intend to. ( )
