Original :Write Away. One Novelits's Approach to Fiction and the Writing Life,2004 This was solid advice from the talented author, Elizabeth George, that explores the craft of writing fiction. Drawing on her own experience as an established mystery novelist, she offers practical advice and exercises to help aspiring writers develop their skills in areas such as plot, character development, and dialogue. The book also includes personal anecdotes and insights into George's own writing process. I particularly appreciated her observations on dialogue and character development. Again working through her character-building worksheet while re-reading my notes on how to plot the book, write scenes, and set the theme via the Main Character's Core Need and pathological maneuver. Excellent advice, if not so easy to follow (especially during NaNoWriMo!!). Elizabeth George writes crime fiction; here she offers a `how to' manual for fiction writers. She distinguishes art from craft in writing, maintaining that the craft can be taught, and giving instructions in the first 14 chapters regarding characters, setting, plot, landscape, start, viewpoint, dialogue and scenes. Lengthy passages are quoted by way of illustration, mostly from crime novels, many from her own, as well as frequent excerpts from her Journal of a Novel. The last 8 chapters are autobiographical, describing her own writing development and process. Suitable for reading and discussion by groups of aspiring writers, or particular fans of George, but not for normal reading groups.
Elizabeth George is one of the most successful writers of crime fiction in the world. Her twelve novels have appeared on bestseller lists in the UK, USA and Australia, and several of them have been dramatised by BBC Television as the Inspector Lynley Mysteries. She has also written a collection of short stories and edited a crime anthology. Now she shares this wealth of experience with would-be novelists, and with crime fiction fans. Drawing extensively on her own work, and that of other bestselling writers including Stephen King, Harper Lee, Dennis Lehane and many others, she illustrates her points about plotting, characterisation and technique with great clarity. She also includes extracts from her own Journals - the diaries she keeps as writes each of her novels - and these give us an unprecedented insight into the creative mind, with all its highs and lows.
