Brookgreen Gardens, celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 1981, stunningly displays our nation's most comprehensive collections of American sculpture. More than 350 outstanding works, dating from as early as 1860, are beautifully sited among Brooksgreen's native flowering shrubs, and ancient moss-draped trees, in shaded bowers, on broad lawns and reflected in still ponds. For this book, more that fifty representative American sculptures were especially photographed in their breathtaking setting, reminding museum-goers that most sculpture originally was created to be seen in sunlight among natural surroundings.
