Things are not well in the kingdom...While Skeeve and Aahz are preoccupied with the aftermath of Gleep's shooting, the MYTH Inc crew faces its biggest challenge yet-not one, but multiple challenges to the king and his court sorcerer Word on the street is that the kingdom is under the control of a mighty sorcerer. It's obvious that this magician dabbles in the black arts: He consorts with demons. He has a dragon for a pet. He's connected to the criminal underground, trading political influence for their assistance in keeping the populace under control. And for most citizens, all this could be overlooked, except that this villain has committed the greatest crime possible: he's raised taxes Clearly something has to be done The citizens are beginning to ponder and mutter, both individually and in groups, about how this tyrant can be brought down. And while they vary greatly in skill and intelligence, certainly the sheer volume of them virtually ensures the eventual downfall of the scoundrel that's currently growing fat off the kingdom...the man called Skeeve the Great. I was (and am) very regretful to finish this. I loved Robert Asprin, and have had a two decade affair with the Myth Adventures books. Oh, no, wait just a minute. Three decades, my dears. Three.
I've purchased Myth-Told Tales (a collection of short stories), which falls between this book, and Myth Alliances, but I think I'll end my reading with the latter.
Something M.Y.T.H. Inc. is a return to the old style of writing, and the last that he did on his own. It's a window into the best of the Myth world, and told from the viewpoint of multiple characters. I don't know that it wears well. I suspect that my sentiment over the author, and over the series, made this more pleasant than it might be for someone just starting with them now.
Sometimes things honestly live in a specific time, and this series is probably one of them. This books is a good entry in the series, probably as good as any since the first six. It's fun, with the overreaching and painful word play the series was known for. ( )
The most scattered and my least favorite of the Myth series so far. Guido has the most narration time, with occasional straight author narration for characters that end up having very little to do with the story and (gasp) don't even add that much humor. This book wraps up the Possiltum era of the adventures of Skeeve and Aahz. ( )
This is the twelfth and final volume of one of my favorite series of all time. A word of warning: read the rest of the series first. And if it's been a while (as it had been with me), at least reread Sweet Myth-tery of Life. I was a little lost here and there, as some events in this book take place simultaneously with its predecessor. Also note that as this is a book with M.Y.T.H. Inc. in the title, it is not narrated solely by Skeeve, but (in this case) mostly by Guido. His incessant Guys'n'Dolls-esque speech gets a bit tiring from time to time, but if you enjoy old mafia movies there are certain scenes that are just a hoot. I would share the plot, but there isn't much to say. Ostensibly it's about a popular uprising against The Great Skeeve for raising taxes, but really it's just a tying up of loose ends. The ending is optimistic, and it's nice to have some closure after all these years. ( )
