New York City is known for it's fast pace, architecture, and subways but one day a Hawk was seen flying over fifth avenue. Many people were amazed because wildlife isn't a big part of New York. They soon began observing the hawk and named him Pale Male because of its light feathers. Pale male began to set up shop in New York as he met another female hawk. The Hawks began to nest on an apartment building where they started a family. They became the most talked about watched and talked about birds. The baby hawks didn't have the luxury of practicing their flight in a tree because they were at the peak of an apartment building. The baby birds eventually took flight and explored New York just as their parents did and began to start a family which kept the cycle going for bird watchers. This book shows people that nature exists even in fast moving places and if we stop to embrace nature we'll see how fascinating it could be. ( )

This is the story of Pale Male, a hawk that finds a home on the top of a building in the city. Residents of the building are not too happy about their new neighbor but once they get the hawks nest removed, the citizens of the city are not happy with this. They come together to bring back Pale Males home. ( )

A story of the famous red tailed hawks that took up residents in the busy dirty New York city. This version of the story share the story of the bird as he moves in to the city, finds a mate, builds a nest, and lays eggs.

This a unique version of the similar story as the children's book, The Tale of Pale Male a True Story. I would use both of these books in my classroom to provide my students with various view points as both stories tell Pale Male's story but one tells of the bird's struggles while the other tells of the bird's success.

Regardless of which story you read, Pale Male's story is unique and amazing. Sharing these two stories will provide students with an opportunity to write two different versions of the same story. ( )

City Hawk is based on the true story of a red tail hawk that made a nest in New York City. This would be a good book to use for a lesson plan. Using the book for a read aloud and showing pictures of the real life hawk would connect the book to real life red-tailed hawk. This book could also be used to show city life to suburban children. This book could also be used to show city kids the nature that lives in the city with them.
In most cases, the illustration covers both pages when you open the book. The pictures are eye catching, but the color palette is simple and muted. Two sections have been added to the book which tells the true story of the pale male. ( )

The best part of this book was the author's note and background information on Central Park. ( )
