Approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually in the United States. --National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sexual assault, rape, sexual harassment, pornography, prostitution, domestic violence, dating abuse, male and female victimization, and stalking are topics addressed in Rus Ervin Funk's reference book entitled Reaching Men. Secretary of the Board of Directors of the National Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence, a social worker since 1983, and co-founder of the Baltimore Sexual Abuse Treatment Center, Rus shares the knowledge he gained in creating strategies that call on all men to change their attitudes and behaviors and help stop violence.Educating men about sexism and violence can, however, be a daunting task. Men often challenge, disagree, confront, disengage, tune out, or dismiss those topics that make them uncomfortable. Using clear, concise writing, Rus provides the theory and tools to talk to and with men about sexism and sexist violence in a way that motivates them to stop the violence. He answers the questions that those working with men's groups confront, such as:?How can you phrase the issues so that men can (and will) hear the message? How should you respond to men's defensiveness?Should you try to convey the messages without inciting men's anger?Key features: guide for creating programs for preventing sexist attitudes, behaviors, and violence; strategies for engendering political change through legislative and media channels; appropriate responses to common myths and negative attitudes; sample presentation outlines and worksheets to use with groups; additional resources; and suggested readings.… (plus d'informations)
