I am going to give Mr. Jones four stars on the Wolves of Winter. The Continuation of what began in the Essex Dogs is solid, enjoyable and establishes much more personality for the small group of mercenaries fighting in France for the English. This story connects things up nicely and tends to be a little grittier than the first. (Did not think that was possible.) The long-term effects of war on men who have endured much of their life in battle is prevalent. Some are numb to it and others not so much. The writing is seamless and moves the reader forward at a good clip. The introduction of the Flemish mercs is rather comical and you can smell things best left unmentioned. It seems much of the book revolves around Romford and his issues, but he does seem to find his place.... if not for a little while. There are some surprises in The Wolves of Winter and as always it seems Mr. Jones has upped his game. There will be much more in this review once the initial reading has been absorbed. This Novel is just as much about redemption as it is allowing your path in life to guide itself and see where it goes. Let us not forget sacrifice. How many lives have been swallowed up in conflicts such as The Hundred years war? How many men and women were sucked into this machine of never ending conflict and buried beneath the heavy ink on the pages of history? Dan Jones gives us that and allows us to think of the forgotten pieces in a not so forgotten world. The wolves of winter could have easily been published as one long story. (My bias. I prefer long books.) But by releasing two volume it gives the reader a chance to contemplate the scope and settings of the both books. Is a third book possible. That would be great, but considering Mr. Jones has another book being released in Oct. It might not be for a while. aucune critique | ajouter une critique

"Bruised and bloodied by an epic battle at Crécy, six soldiers known as the Essex Dogs pick through the wreckage of the fighting--and their own lives. Now a new siege is beginning, and the Dogs are sent to attack the soaring walls of Calais. King Edward has vowed no Englishman will leave France 'til this city falls. To get home, they must survive a merciless winter in a lawless camp deadlier than any battlefield. Obsessed with tracking down the vanished Captain, Loveday struggles to control his own men. Romford is haunted by the reappearance of a horrific figure from his past. And Scotsman is spiraling into a pit of drink, violence, and self-pity. The Dogs are being torn apart--but this war is far from over. It won't be long before they lose more of their own"-- Aucune description trouvée dans une bibliothèque |
