This book offers a fresh approach to the study of Renaissance architecture and urban history by focussing on the imagery of the civic institutions of Bologna - those devoted to religion, government, law, commerce, welfare, and learning. The first part deals with the site and the urban determinants of the medieval city-state that constitute the structure of the future city. The second part concentrates on the forms of individual buildings as visual manifestations of the contemporary culture.
