"India Allwood grew up wanting to be an actress. Armed with a stack of index cards and a hell of a lot of talent, she goes from awkward 16-year-old to Broadway ingenue to tv star. But while promoting her most recent project, a film about adoption, India does what you should never do - she tells a journalist the truth: it's a bad movie. Like so many movies about adoption, it tells only one story, a tragic one. But India's an adoptive mom herself and knows there's so much more to her family than tragedy. Soon she's at the center of a media storm, battling accusations from the press and the paparazzi, from protesters on the right and advocates on the left. Her daughter Fig knows they need help - and who better to call for help than family? Because India's not just an adoptive mom. She also had a baby she gave up for adoption her senior year of high school. That baby is now sixteen, excited to meet her birth mother and eager to help, but she also has an agenda and secrets of her own. It turns out what makes a family isn't blood and it isn't love because no matter how they're formed, the hallmark of true family is this: it's complicated"--… (plus d'informations)

This is a nice book. A very pleasant book. It will never be a classic, but what a joy to read. It is funny, clever (sometimes too clever), warm, touching. The plot is silly and contrived at times, but that adds to the pleasure of the read. The last section or so is very preachy, but I think that's the point -- and it works.

Don't miss this one. ( )

I’ve been thinking about how to describe this book that I liked so much. In many ways it reminded me of "Tom Lake" and "Lessons in Chemistry." India Allwood, the main character, has always wanted to be a serious actress on the Broadway stage (details of rehearsals and performances of several plays), yet she isn’t taken seriously and is misunderstood as a woman who intentionally places two of her newborn children in adoptive families. She is unusual in her attitudes towards family, children, adoption, and abortion. And even though these are significant topics, the book is very funny – lots of humor and wordplay and complicated plot twists that result in a heartwarming, hilarious, and slightly outrageous novel about adoption and what makes a family a “family family.”

During the pandemic, India has starred in a movie about adoption, and everything blows up while promoting the movie when she explains how she wants people to know that stories of adoption can be happy, not only the ones that tell of orphanages, abandonment, and tragedy. She explains how “there are infinity different kinds of families. And every member of every one has a different story to tell about it. So the fact that a few stories about adoption are the only ones that ever get told seems like a problem to me.”

The novel goes back and forth in time from India’s high school years to college, with her significant boyfriends, her 10-year-old adopted twins, as a notable Broadway actress, and as a famous TV superhero. I enjoyed how author Laurie Frankel wove the Covid pandemic into the plot, with our then naïve and wishful thinking that the lockdown would only last a few weeks (or a few months).

There is so much to like in this novel about family - whether adopted, bio, chosen, or found family. As India says, “no matter how they get made, family is a force to be reckoned with.” This thought-provoking and entertaining novel would make a great book club choice. I highly recommend it. ( )

India's life choices make for a fascinating story. It was nice to get a different kind of adoption story, too. Great book. ( )

An amazing book and such a fun read. She writes children so well pretty much all ages. What constitutes a family. Choices such as adoption abortion and single motherhood. Loved the people and happy it did not turn into a sloppy romance. ( )
